The post has rusted through right at the bottom and might be structurally unsafe as a result. This area of the post is often hidden behind the longer grass but has been cut back recently. For this reason it's hard to say how long it has been like this, but to have rusted right through must have taken considerable time. Lots of pedestrian traffic pass this point every day with children going to and from school and playing on the grasses area in front of the column.
