Sinkhole development

Reported via desktop in the Gully/Drainage category by Jeff Cuttell at 15:48, Friday 18 February 2022

Sent to Cheshire East Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 3323379.

This was originally reported as a pothole issue. It is now a developing drainage issue. Obviously the weather is bad at the moment from storms Dudley & Eunice, but this picture clearly shows SAND is being brought up from below the road surface. (This appears as the orange streaked water/silt deposits around the pothole). The kinetic energy of the emerging water flow is high enough to mobilise sand-grain sized particulate matter from underground. Sand emerging at the surface, doesn't come from nowhere. Voids are being produced at a subsurface level. As I have said before - this situation is heading for potentially a collapse of the road structure and formation of a sinkhole. The pothole void is already a foot deep. The 12 inch yellow ruler I have placed upright in the hole is now almost completely submerged by the water. I have already reported this by phone as an emergency, as I fear the road may collapse under the weight of a vehicle... I really don't know what else to do to indicate my fears of this posing a risk to life and health whilst ever the issue remains unattended.

  • Thank you for contacting Cheshire East Highways. We have logged your enquiry and passed it to a member of our team.

Our teams are working hard to manage and respond to reports from members of the public.

We are currently experiencing an increase in demand of reported issues along with a temporary reduction in available staff due to Covid-related sickness and self-isolation.

During this time and until the situation improves, we will be prioritising those issues that present most risk to the travelling public. While we normally aim to provide you with a response within 20 working days, response times for all other reported issues may take longer than usual.

    Thank you for your patience.
