Broken Manhole Cover outside rear of Tesco Express, West Road

Hello, I reported a broken manhole cover at the rear of the Tesco Express on West Road (A34) on 2nd Jan 22. I had previously reported it in Dec 21. It is still insecure, possibly dangerous as it bangs each time a vehicle hits it. The noise all day and night is depressing and constant as scores of vehicles hit it every hour. Can it be properly secured, once and for all please?

  • The problem is still ongoing. The manhole cover makes a terrific banging noise each time a vehicle is driven over it. The council contacted me yesterday to report they were aware of the issue and would send someone out to fix it.

  • The problem seems endless. The 3 manhole covers seem to take turns breaking loose and banging away as vehicles hit them. I cannot fault the enthusiasm by Highways and the Utility Companies in trying to lock them down but it simply does not seem to work. Listening to the noise at 3 AM is very depressing. Can they not be fixed once and for all please?

  • It is not clear whether the issue of defective manhole covers is the responsibility of the Utility Companies or the Council. Neither body seems able, or is prepared to take ownership of this ongoing noise pollution for nearby residents and any possible danger it might represent to road users.
